Begun as an initiative to boost consumer confidence at the turn of the credit crisis in 2009, FNO has truly taken off to encompass the plethora of global Fashion cities; “From Manhattan to Milan, Atlanta to Australia, the after-hours shopping extravanganza…is back!” To mention but a few events capturing the fashionistas this year; Little Red Sole cocktails at Christian Louboutin, London; Justin Bieber at Dolce et Gabbana, NY; all of Rua da Liberdade, Baixa and Chiado, Lisbon.
Although I found this initiative tasteless when first launched in ’09, this year’s event nurtures a more crisis-conscious attitude; countries not usually associated with fashion and trends, such as Mexico, South Korea and Portugal, are on the map and portrayed as the fashion capitals they have truly developed themselves into. Such an event boosts economies in much need of consumers actively engaging in their local artisans and crafts. Furthermore, the FNO collection created in collaboration with designers partaking in the events, support organizations such as the NY Aids foundation with 40% of the proceeds.
